Liberia, Senegal and After…

I am so very thankful for current opportunities to serve the mission community in a variety of ways. I am grateful to you who keep making this possible through your prayers, financial support and encouragement.

001.0_019Our February trip to Liberia was challenging on a number of levels. The weather was warm– consistently day and night from mid-80 to mid-90 – but the humidity made it feel like a constant sauna. Thankfully there was air conditioning in our bedrooms.  We arrived with a day or two to adjust to jet lag and orient to Liberia.  We were treated to a tour of the new ELWA hospital and a drive through Monrovia, the capital city nearby. We then had three days, at a resort area an hour away, for the Spiritual Life Conference.  We took a program on living in families, featuring Adam and Eve. Over and over parents expressed their appreciation of our service to provide for their children while they were in sessions that refreshed and fed them.  We were then able to do some resting, and a small amount of shopping from several local vendors who were invited to share specialty goods they craft to support themselves. 037.0_053 The last task we had was to sort a shipment of medical supplies that had arrived six months previously. Due to a shortage of workers, and a lack of knowledge to which department it belonged, this inventory had not been sorted.  We had two members of our group who could identify and organize the sorting and our team unpacked pallets of goods and sorted them into operating room supplies, patient gowns, syringes, orthopedic supplies and other categories.  In two days the warehouse was sorted! Broad smiles and profusions of thanks assured us the work was greatly appreciated.

The team returned to the States and I hopped over to spend a long weekend with Corey, Katie, and the girls in Senegal.  Emma and Molly had a midterm break and we vacationed at a spot near their school on the coast.  s07_063It was far too short, but we did enjoy being together and celebrating Molly’s 14th birthday!  It was also a great blessing to spend some time with a new couple in Senegal, the Gallaghers, as they came to celebrate a milestone in their language training.  It was so good to see them in Senegal after all the prayers and efforts of walking with them through the year they worked to get to the field.

Soon after I returned to the USA and rested a bit from jet lag, I was asked to help in the kitchen preparing meals for 50 candidates and family members for the SIM week-long training event (SIMGo) for future missionaries.  It is a great blessing to be able to assist these people answering God’s call on their lives to serve him around the world in full-time missions.

In reviewing our trip to Liberia, our team sees a need to have materials prepared in advance available for other country’s Spiritual Life Conference teams and we are working on exploring what we can do to arrange this sort of thing.  It is a true privilege to serve missionaries on the field so they can be refreshed and renewed in this way.  They then are able to return to their areas of service energized and strengthened.

At the same time, I am working on completing another edition of the prayer calendar, By Prayer.  I am constantly amazed at God’s provision of just the right wording for requests to fit the space available and pack the greatest amount of meaning in those few words.  Frequently I hear back comments, “the prayer request you edited is perfect,” or “Your rendition is perfect! THANKS!!” I know it is NOT my ability, but God’s! Every issue grows my relationships with the 86 contributors with whom I correspond.  One contributor wrote in with an apology for being a little late, and included this testimony, “We believe in [By Prayer] and we are glad that we get the opportunity to serve along with you in this [ministry].”  It is a distinct pleasure to serve together in this valuable ministry of prayer.

Last week in chapel I brought an urgent prayer request to Charlie, the director of Celebration and Prayer at SIM USA:  a couple on the field who had a short-term team with them for the weekend and had planned to show the Jesus film in three different villages.  This involves taking a gasoline powered generator to the villages to run the projector and sound system to show the movie.  For several days prior to these planned showings there had been no gasoline available in their remote town.  Charlie announced at 9:00 a.m. in morning chapel their need for 20 liters of gasoline to run the generator for these three showings for the next three nights, and we prayed.  Within two hours a truck had arrived in town and they were able to get the needed 20 liters, even though they were rationing the gasoline in five-gallon increments.  It is wonderful to see direct answers to prayers.

Because I see answers like these, and a history of many answered prayers in my life, I solicit your prayers for me at this time of serious concern.  Upon return from Liberia I have had to earnestly examine my support account.  The February report shows giving for the last five months has averaged around 42% of what has been my budget requirement.  In order to remain in good standing with SIM financially, something must drastically change.  Accordingly, I met with the budget department this week and decreased my budget by 30% in an effort to make the money that does come in last longer.

I do plan to start receiving Social Security this year, significantly reducing my support needs, but there are seven more months before that happens.  Even after I start Social Security, I will still need ministry funds to continue to participate in short-term trips to fields to help with Spiritual Life Conferences and other service opportunities that arise.  Please pray with me for the additional $1,200 per month that is needed through October, as well as continued ministry fund support into the foreseeable future.

I thank God daily for your prayers and support.  I can tell you are praying in the many ways I see God acting in each day.  Without you lifting me up, I would be able to do nothing.  Please continue to pray diligently on my behalf so I can continue to serve faithfully.

Be sure to look at the 40+ pictures from my trip!

Praises:

  • A meaningful service to the Liberia team in their SLC
  • Safe travels for the whole team there and back
  • The completion of the SIMGo week for the new missionaries training, and the energy to help prepare delicious meals each day
  • Continued production of meaningful prayer requests processed through By Prayer

Prayers:

  • Wisdom to know how to rearrange finances with reduced income
  • Support funds to increase the $1,200 per month needed until October
  • Donors to contribute to ministry activities for the long term
  • Guidance in evaluating how to plan in advance in helping country SLC events

Is there something I left out you have questions about? Email me and ask!  So much happened, I can’t put it all here!

What does the future hold?

Greetings in 2017!  This year looks like it will be a year of significant events.  On January 15th, I celebrated a whole year in my little town house.  When I moved in, I had one air bed mattress, and now I have a whole house full of furniture!

I was afraid I would never travel again, and here I have helped with a Spiritual Life Conference (SLC) in Thailand last summer and anticipate another one in February.

This will be the first time I have led a team to help out at a Spiritual Life Conference for a field group of SIM missionaries.  There is so much I don’t know about leading a team of this sort but I have lots of help here at SIM in figuring out what is required and how to do it.  We depart around February 10th and will help with the conference as well as a medical health check for the staff of the ELWA hospital.  Below is a notice compiled by another member of the SLC team with a brief description of the work being done in Liberia and links to publicity received through the Ebola crisis there.

Please join me in prayer for guidance in financial issues.  I will turn 70 in October and at that time transition to Social Security and pension payments for the majority of my support.  Until then, I still must look to God to supply financial partners to labor with me in this ministry.  The generous funds that came through last year in the matching funds drive brought me through 2016.  My support account currently has enough funds in it to pay me through February.  The regular monthly support I have coming in is only about 20% of what is required.  In the past I have had a number of annual supporters, but have not seen many of these come in for 2017 so far.

You may say it is foolishness for me to go to Liberia if I do not have funds for my support.  And in the world’s eyes I would readily agree with you.  However, I have also seen God provide for me through many diverse ways as long as I am obedient to Matthew 6:33 and seek his kingdom first.  Going to Liberia at this time is doing just that, so I have confidence in HIM to provide the needed $2,500 for this, as well as the funds to support me through to October and beyond.

Please earnestly join me in praying for God’s guidance and provision.

Pray for our Liberia Team, both those of us going to support our field team mates and the team in the field ministering to those who have never heard of the saving grace of Jesus Christ.

About the SIM Liberia team in Monrovia

“On the outskirts of Monrovia, the capital of Liberia, on grassy land among palm trees and tropical hardwoods, stands a cluster of one-story bungalows painted cheerful yellow with blue trim.  This is the campus of Eternal Love Winning Africa, a nondenominational Christian mission, comprising a school, a radio station and a hospital.  It was here that Dr. Jerry Brown, the hospital’s medical director, first heard in March that the fearsome Ebola virus had gained a toehold in his country.”

TIME Person of the Year – “The Ebola Fighters” – December 22, 2014

Comments by Janice Waddell, one of our team going with me to Liberia.  “When Nancy Writebol asked the staff at SIM USA for help at the ELWA campus, the first thought that came to me was: “this is something that I could do.”   Nancy’s request was for a team to assist with a desperately needed health clinic for the staff members working on the ELWA campus and to facilitate a Spiritual Life Conference for SIM missionaries serving in Liberia. ”

A new and expanded hospital which had been in process was delayed by the Ebola outbreak.  It was finally completed and dedicated in October of 2016.  Here the President of Liberia participates in the ceremonies and has some very gracious words for the ELWA hospital.

You may remember that Nancy Writebol was one of the American SIM missionaries who contracted the Ebola virus while serving in Liberia in 2014.  Now recovered, Nancy is serving at ELWA once again.

The hospital is not the only ministry in Liberia.  Here are snippets about two other vital SIM ministries.

Christmas 2016

Its Christmas week and I can hardly believe 2016 is drawing to a close.  As I look back at this year I am amazed at all that has happened.

January – I moved into my little townhouse with much assistance from good friends.

March – saw a trip to Florida to visit the SIM retirement home at Sebring, see my brother, and bring back family treasures for my new home.

June – Corey and family arrived from Senegal for a short home assignment and spent the first several weeks with me.

July – brought a drive to Connecticut to connect with family and supporters and a trip to Thailand to help with their Spiritual Life Conference.

October – held a wonderful visit with Julie and Jeremy in Chicago and a drive back bringing more treasures for my home that had been stored for 15 years.

November – I was back in Connecticut for a celebration and time with good friends.

January through December – six editions of By Prayer were successfully completed even in the midst of all these travels.  Additional aspects of producing By Prayer have been handed over to me to consolidate the whole process as much as possible within the Praise and Celebration department.

And can you believe, when I moved to Charlotte I thought my traveling days were over!

Looking ahead to 2017 it appears there will be a continuation of much activity.

The opportunity to work with a group engaged in Spiritual Warfare has developed in the last few months.  Aware of the seriousness of this type of ministry I am asking for a team of prayer partners to join with me to be in frequent prayer for me, the team and those our team work with.  If you feel God’s prod to join with me in prayer, please reply and I will add your name to this special prayer team.  I will be sending this focused team updates on the work we are doing and specific prayer requests.  Regardless of whether you join in this special prayer ministry, would you please add prayers for spiritual discernment and wisdom for me and the team?

An opportunity to help with a Spiritual Life conference for the SIM team in Liberia in February has arisen.  Because of my experience with retreat planning, I have been asked to be the team leader for this group.  The dates will most likely be somewhere around February 10 to 23.  The cost will likely be between $2500 and $3000.  Please pray with me for the funding for this trip.

As 2016 winds down, so is my financial support.  The matching fund drive of last year has brought me through the year.  In the next few months that will run out.  I have marginal monthly support.  Pray with me for God to raise up financial provision for 2017.

Attached please find some gifts for you.  One is coloring pages of both Christmas and Easter since without the one the other is meaningless.  There is also a candle scene to print and put over a votive candle to celebrate the season.  One in color and one in black and white.

I plan a quiet at-home Christmas to spend time contemplating the incarnation.  I hope you also will carve out some time to spend in wonder and enjoyment of our brother and savior, Jesus.

Many blessings to you at this time of remembering our Savior’s arrival in this world to sacrifice himself on our behalf,

Janie

Praise with me:

  • A lovely home to live in and share with others
  • A year of travel and service
  • Opportunities to serve the SIM worldwide community

Prayer requests:

  • Wisdom and discernment for the Spiritual Warfare ministry
  • Planning and provision for the SLC in Liberia in February
  • Continued health and energy to serve well
  • Financial support to increase

Return From Thailand

Read on to hear about the adventures our team had in Thailand!

Here is both the short email cover letter in italics and the longer version follows it.

We arrived and spent an amazing week seeing sights of Thailand, working to get plans for children’s sessions finished and getting over jet lag.  MORE:

IMG_20160722_095610946_HDRWe did take some fun trips around the area to see an ancient Buddhist temple, a modern shopping mall, the ancient wall and moat around the old city, and out to the countryside to see and ride elephants.  I took off my sandals so I wouldn’t drop them and then just rested my feet on the elephant’s back!  WElephantfeete saw an entertaining elephant show that ended with the elephants painting pictures.  Be sure to note the photo with the elephant’s painting in it!

We then went to the tiger center because several of our group wanted to go into the tiger cage to pet the tigers.  One wanted a companion to take Janie-Tiger-3446pictures, so I went and even petted some (thankfully) lethargic tigers.

We also went (several times!) to the “Night Market” a couple of blocks from our hotel where vendors set up stalls along the street and in open areas to sell a wide variety of items.  I have included some pictures of the street in the day time and at night.

I bought some (pretty unique) sneakers from one vendor (there is a picture of him and his stall) and had a chance to shoe salesmantalk with him about Christianity.  He said a man had prayed for him once and he felt a current through his touch.  When I prayed for him, he said, “nothing, no current.”  The next time we saw him he stopped me and said that after we left his stall, he sold more shoes than he has ever sold in one night, almost all the stock he had.  He was clearly impressed.  He expressed interest to receive a Bible and I made arrangements for one of the Thailand SIM staff to take him one.  Please pray for this lovely Buddhist man to come to know Jesus as his savior.

From Saturday to Wednesday we were outside Chiang Mai at a lovely resort area for the Spiritual Life Conference (SLC) for the Thailand team and the Central and South East Asia office, both located in Thailand.  It was great to get to know these saints who labor and serve in this challenging area.  Their children were lively and engaging, and we had a lovely time together.  MORE:

IMG_20160726_190916217We were pampered at a lovely resort set in the Thailand hills with individual huts nestled in trees with meandering paths all set on a peaceful little lake complete with canoes, a picturesque bridge, and fabulous sunsets.  Meals were served on a shaded sprawling porch right next to the modern air-conditioned conference room where the worship and adult sessions were held.  Over meals, I was able to meet with and get to know some of the adults and parents, some of whom I have been corresponding with for By Prayer over the past year.  It was nice to get to have people’s faces to put with email addresses.

Children smaller than 7 years old met at a separate building overlooking the two swimming pools, and the 7 to 12 year olds, IMG_20160725_114541814Austin Thorsen and I held our sessions next door to the conference room.  We had six children and studied a different Bible hero/heroine across the five sessions.  When one boy was told his family would have to leave the retreat a day early, he begged his mom to come back for the final day, and they did.  So, I think they all had fun and learned some.  The highlight was tie dying t-shirts, reenacting the rout of the Philistines after David killed Goliath (Austin), and the contest of Bible Trivia between the children and myself.  When I beat them the first go round, they spent the rest of the days trying to collectively beat me!  Yes, they finally did….  I think we all will remember this SLC together a long time.

We returned to Chiang Mai for the last several days of our time in Thailand and did some final touring and shopping and lots of resting.  Our team departed in stages and I traveled back alone arriving on Sunday evening.  MORE:

We made one last touring trip up in the hills to see another Buddhist temple and a Buddhist retreat center, and visited the Night Market a couple more times.  I spent a good bit of time in my room finishing up edits for the latest issue of By Prayer to send to the typesetter and just resting after a whirlwind two weeks in the flip flop thirteen-hour time difference.

I flew back last and alone.  I left Thailand at midnight on Saturday, flew in three flights in which I spent twenty-one and a half hours in the air, seven and a half hours in airports, traveled across thirteen time zones and arrived back in Charlotte on Sunday, July 31 at 3:30 in the afternoon.  Jet lag has really been a challenge to process, since our bodies take one day per time zone crossed to adjust.  I only have about three more days.

Because I was in Connecticut the first week of July, preparing for and gone to Thailand for the next three weeks, and the Perspectives course continued on, I am behind on homework for five lessons.  We are in the middle of a two-week break so I am trying to catch up on as much as I can.  I also have a project to turn in.  Fortunately I was able to interview a Thai for my project so only have to write it up, but it all takes time and energy.  While I have time, I haven’t had the energy for it all!

I have started to help out with transport of visitors to the SIM campus to the airport and have taken two trips to help relieve the very busy Hospitality staff at the SIM USA Office.

As I look back on the last month, I can see the amazing hand of God in all that has happened.  Your partnership in confirming and equipping me with your prayers and support strengthened me to do everything that was done.

Be sure to check out lots more pictures here!

Praises:

  • Flights, while long, were uneventful and everyone’s luggage made it both there and back.
  • Our plans were completed, the retreat was refreshing and all benefited.
  • We all had a fun time exploring Thailand.

Prayers:

  • Because I was gone three weeks in July, I am behind in lots of work!  Pray I will be able to focus and accomplish everything that I need to in the coming weeks.
  • While I currently have adequate funds in my support account, please pray for more regular monthly supporters.
